Diamonds and the Green Revolution
More and more people are becoming aware that the earth’s resources are limited. While diamonds have held a very precious role in people’s hearts, in association with romance and love, the practice of mining and using the earth’s gems for jewelry can spur twinges of conscience in the more environmentally aware. So, do those people have to resort to forgoing a traditional diamond engagement ring for the sake of their political views, or can they still find ways to make room for diamonds in their heart?
Eco-Friendly Approaches to Diamonds
Some people have opted for keeping the diamond ring in their lives as a symbol of love, and instead used recycled metals to make their statement. They do the same with the gold wedding bands too. This is one way to get an eco-friendly setting without forgoing the diamond.
Then, they buy their diamond from a Canadian producer. This way, they know they are not funding any conflict diamonds, but also, more importantly to them, they know that the Canadian government has strict environmental regulations regarding the practice of diamond mining.
Other Less Consumerist Approaches
Many couples like the idea of passing a family heirloom down from one generation to another. So, they might opt to take a diamond from a previous ring within the family and use it to create another ring, with recycled metals. They can even do this with other stones, besides diamonds, so that they can say with confidence that the entire ring has been “recycled.”
So, there are a number of ways to keep the tradition of a diamond in your life without betraying your conscience or political views. It just takes a little forethought and little research to get exactly what you want.
